WHO ARE THE HOMELESS?

Every 3 years, Wilder Research conducts a statewide survey of people without permanent shelter. The most recent one was completed last fall. Here are some quick facts about individuals who are homeless in Minnesota:
  • They number 9654 adults, children and youth
  • They total 4041 in the metro area
  • Their numbers have grown by 25% since the last survey in 2006
  • Half have been without a regular or permanent place to live for a year or more
  • 45% are women
  • 50% are African-American - a disproportionate share compared to 4% of the Minnesota population overall
  • One quarter have more than a high school education; one quarter have less than a high school education
  • Two thirds have lived in Minnesota 6 years or more
  • 52% have a chronic health condition, such as high blood pressure, asthma or diabetes
  • 46% struggle with mental illness and 22% have a chemical dependency
