Nearly every individual entering a Cabrini Partnership program is unemployed at entry. Some have poor work histories or little experience. Others have job skills that are outdated. Many have experienced challenges in their ability to be a reliable employee because of mental illness and/or chemical dependency. Yet the most critical need cited by our residents is for a job.
A year ago Cabrini Partnership joined with four other supportive housing organizations in a collaboration called "Allies for Employment." Our goal was improving the assistance for clients seeking a job. This need is particularly acute in the current economy.
This week more than 50 individuals from 20 agencies joined together in our Community & Learning Resource Center for a 3-day workshop sponsored by the "Allies." The workshop focused on helping clients who are ex-offenders. Together, the participants explored best practices for assisting ex-offenders in acquiring job readiness skills, appropriate community resources and how to assist with job placement and job retention strategies.
By working together the likelihood of success is increased, and resources used more efficiently, for those who want to work and to regain the dignity that comes from gainful employment.
