NEED FOR SHELTER SPACES RISE AS TEMPERATURES DROP

With the winter season upon us, we're seeing a rise in homeless individuals seeking shelter to escape the biting cold nights of Minneapolis. This year, however, the number of homeless individuals is higher than it's been since 2000 (Wilder Research).

According to MinnPost, there are five shelters with about 800 beds in Hennepin County for single, homeless adults, but 300 or more people may still be sleeping outside.

To address the problem of individuals facing harsh winter nights, a proposal is going before the Minneapolis City Council that will increase temporary shelter for 50 more people from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. at First Covenant Church, near the Metrodome.

Although support appears strong, there are some who oppose the proposal and others who are advocating for adding even more temporary spaces to sleep.

You can support those who are homeless this season by giving to organizations like Cabrini Partnership and by attending the public hearing that is being held on December 2 at 9:30 a.m. in Minneapolis City Council chambers to discuss the new plan.
